Now for part 5 of my 11-part series. Let’s take a look at one of the more dominant teams of 2011.

Studs
Hmmm…I’m not sure that we have one here. Some people might get excited about Andy Dalton, but less than 9 points a game out of your quarterback isn’t going to keep pace with Rodgers, Brady, and Brees. I think Enright should have kept Dalton to see if he can take the next step. He probably can’t, since he’s a ginger.
Misses
I don’t really think any of these guys are outright misses. If I had to pick one, it would be Ryan Mallett. Mallett was rarely active this season, and never sniffed any fantasy points. I know he’s a project guy you just stash in hopes that he will get his chance or get traded, but I don’t think he was worth a draft pick. I think the proper way to handle this situation is to just wait until a guy like that is available on the waiver wire, the way Franssen did with Matt Flynn. It could be years before Mallett sees action (if at all,) whereas Flynn will probably become a starter somewhere.
Too Soon to Tell
Getting linebacker Nate Irving in the 4th round doesn’t seem like a horrible decision. Paying $6 for a guy to score 3.5 points hurts a bit. But if this guy gets into the starting lineup on a solid Denver defense, then it could be a great investment.
Tight End Jared Cook was highly touted by the pundits, but he largely came up small (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…3 TDs is backup TE territory.) But he seems to have the skills to potentially pay the bills, so I’ll withhold judgment on him for now.
The Uncategorizable
Not sure if that’s a word, but whatever. I’m 99% sure it is. It just looks kind of weird, and I’m too lazy to look it up. Yes, I know that I could have done it by now instead of typing this sentence. Still. Not going to do it. Anyway, I put Kevin Williams in this category, because he was drafted late and scored what a bunch of DTs scored. He was no stud, but it’s not like he shit the bed. And he’s doesn’t really have any upside.
The Grade
Part of the reason the Pirates don’t have a great draft is that they traded all of their early picks for known studs. The strategy seemed to pay off, for most of the season anyway. But looking at what they did with the picks they had, I have come to one inevitable conclusion: “Eh.”
The Pirates get a C in my estimation. It would have been lower, but the two draft picks they actually kept might turn in to something.
The Pirates seemed unstoppable for most of the season. But with their star RBs coming off of ACL surgeries, you have to wonder if they can inspire as much fear in their opponents in 2012. They’ll have to have a pretty solid draft, I think, to pull that off.
When should we implement the one-time franchise tag rule?
- 2021. If you planned on tagging a guy both in 2019 and 2020 then you can still do that. (80%, 8 Votes)

I’m not afraid to say it – I was totally unprepared for the draft. And part of the reason was, as you said, I had traded all relevant picks for studs and solidified my starting lineup. I didnt even use any of these shmucks. I will need to do a tad better next year. I need some Byrd’s in the 7th round.
Yeah, I have a feeling everyone will be a little more on their game this year, since there won’t be a lockout and we have one year of drafting under our belts.
Oh, and another funny thing – Cook was autodrafted when I couldnt hit the submit button for someone else fast enough. Thats why I gave myself a “D”.
