2017–Midseason Awards

Welcome to the SCUFFLE 2017 Midseason Awards. Most of these are strictly based on their total fantasy points and not actually my opinion (except the busts). Just for fun. Enjoy.

QUARTERBACK

Midseason MVP—Alex Smith, Holley Hawks

When Alex Smith was the top QB after week 1, I think we all wrote that off as to an anomaly. Hell, there were two additional such weeks that Holley elected to start Andy Dalton instead (Smith combined for 44 points in those games)—such was the faith we all had in Alex Smith. But here we are, seven weeks into the 2017 season and he is still the top QB, having thrown for more 300 yards games so far than any other year of his career.

Biggest Surprise—Carson Wentz, Oregon Dream Team

No one envisioned that Wentz would be the #2 QB in all the land this season, with a real shot to be the actual NFL MVP. But here he is, locked up for a mere $3.30 for the Dream Team. Future looks bright there.

Top Rookie—Deshaun Watson, Bestine Banthas

I was honestly surprised that any QB in this draft was taken as high as Round 2, but Ryan appears to have hit the jackpot here. Lets hope he’s not the next Robert Griffin III.

Biggest Bust—Ben Roethlisberger, FA (formerly Batavia Colliders)

Batavia has simply not been able to get consistent QB play this season from anyone, Big Ben or Newton, but Ben’s play has been exceptionally poor, including a (-1.35) game—Blake Bortles and Jacoby Brissett are two such names with more points. I think he turns it around in the 2nd half though—they have too many weapons.

Final MVP—Tom Brady, Oregon Dream Team

When it’s all said and done, I think Brady emerges at the top. It’s hard to bet against him. New England is not as dominant as recent years, and that likely helps Brady—they may even have a meaningful game in Weeks 16-17 this season.

RUNNING BACK

Top RB—Todd Gurley, Marshfield Pirates

I feel like I am in a dream and any week I will wake up and realize Todd Gurley is still the biggest disappointment since Kenny Britt. But each week he keeps producing. The freaking Rams are 5-2. No idea how long it will keep up but I’m on board until it ends.

Biggest Surprise—Kareem Hunt, Holley Hawks

Since Week 1, Hunt’s production has been a steady decline, but they are committed to run and giving him the ball, both on the ground and through the air. Without the injury that thrust him into the Week 1 starting role, it might’ve taken him a bit longer to get to this point, but I think we can all agree he will be a top back for years to come.

Top Rookie—Kareem Hunt, Holley Hawks

Hunt still earns this honor, but had Leonard Fournette not missed Week 7, this would almost certainly be his award.

Biggest Bust—Marshawn Lynch, Sweet Home Gridiron Gang

I honestly thought Jesse had the steal of the season getting Lynch for $1. Surely he will remain a factor for the Raiders for the rest of the year, but the Washington/Richard era might begin sooner than later.

Final MVP—Le’Veon Bell, Culver City Krackens

Lets face it—Bell is probably the best back in the NFL. It took Pittsburgh awhile to get rolling, but Bell is young and they are committed to giving him nearly 40 touches a week. I think he finishes as the #1 overall RB.

WIDE RECEIVER

Top WR—Antonio Brown, Batavia Colliders

It seems like no matter what happens or what the state of the Steelers is or who is guarding him, Brown gets his. Too bad he’s wasting away on the Colliders.

Biggest Surprise—Tyreek Hill, Cleveland Battery

There are other nominees for this, like Chris Hogan, who was leading the SCUFFLE WRs in points a couple weeks ago, or maybe Jarvis Landry or Nelson Agholor, but to me, its Hill. I thought he was more of a “gimmick” and too dependent on his special teams play and could never be a #1 WR. So far, I’m dead wrong and Hill is the WR2.

Top Rookie—Cooper Kupp, Holley Hawks

Even with the Rams acquiring Sammy Watkins, Cooper Kupp sure looks like the future. Solid draft pick by Holley.

Biggest Bust—Terrell Pryor, Oregon Dream Team

While names like Julio Jones and TY Hilton are down across the board, to me, this award goes to someone like Pryor, who came out of nowhere to finish as a top 20 WR and seemed to have nowhere to go but up, especially with the move to Washington. But he’s simply been a non-factor and has been seemingly supplanted by nearly anyone else in a Washington jersey.

Final MVP—Antonio Brown, Batavia Colliders

I don’t see anyone passing him.

TIGHT END

Top TE—Zach Ertz, Madtown Marauders

See Carson Wentz. Ertz is his favorite and most reliable target.

Biggest Surprise—Jason Witten, Sullivan Island Silvertips

I honestly didn’t even know he was still playing and he’s a TE6.

Top Rookie—Evan Engram, Cleveland Battery

He’s a beast and with every Giant WR dead, he’s the top target.

Biggest Bust—Jordan Reed, Marshfield Pirates

Well, until this last week he was. Still, I think for expectations and how much I’m paying him, he still fits this bill until another solid week.

Final MVP—Rob Gronkowski, Madtown Marauders

See Tom Brady. If he stays healthy, he’ll finish TE1.

DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS

Top Kicker—Greg Zuerlein, Oregon Dream Team

See LA Rams being 5-2.

Top DT—DeForest Buckner, Oregon Dream Team

A beast in the middle for a defense that is on the field alot. This really turned into a decent pick for Tim.

Top DE—Melvin Ingram, Marshfield Pirates

For the first time in maybe ever, the Pirates have a DL that doesn’t suck.

Top LB—Telvin Smith, Culver City Krackens

Remember when Marcot bid $20 and gave up a R1 for Smith and we were all literally shocked? And then he scored 3 total points in Week 1 and we were all laughing? Well who is laughing now? Damn.

Top CB—Tre’Davious White, Marshfield Pirates

His tackles have slowly drifted off, but this rookie has still be putting up points. Marshfield also happens to own the CB2 in Jason McCourty, who’s move to the Browns seems to have rejuvenated him.

Top S—Tyvon Branch, Fransburg (r)EvoLUtion

There are many good safeties this season, but Branch currently sits atop the list. I’m amazed that this is the only position where undefeated Fransburg has a top player.

  1. Here’s the thing about the Rams – they remind of the 49ers when they got Harbaugh. A new competent coach, and suddenly the talent begins to shine.

    Great article!
