Things started off so promising.
After smartly restructuring the contracts of TE Jordan Reed (longtime Pirate mainstay) and Devanta Freeman (acquired last season), Pirate brass looked to have plenty of cap room for the upcoming RFA bidding. But they were oh so unprepared for what would come.
Not content to just wait and liking what they had at the running back position (obviously making some assumptions there), they used newly restructured Freeman to acquire star wideout Odell Beckham Jr from Bestine. Coming off a devastating injury where he missed most of 2017, he most certainly comes with both injury and contract dispute risk, but ones the fans were more than happy to accept, despite what some consider a steep price.
Lastly, fans were all abuzz when, for the first time ever, Marshfield moved UP in the draft (rather than trading picks away) to acquire the 1.02 pick and cause much speculation as to who the pick could be.
That’s where things fell apart.
Pirate coach Jason Enright was reportedly putting his daughter to bed, reading her Beauty and the Beast, when he got the news that the Battery had bid $85 on Todd Gurley on Day 1 of RFA. Apparently, the Beast decides to eat the Beauty, murders the entire town of Cleveland and then goes on a rampage looking for any person in the world named Ben.
After hours of consideration, debate and calling Pershey a “dirty fantasy whore” under his breath, Enright decided to accept the meager compensation of the 1.09 and 3.13 picks.
“Look, it’s just insane to pay anyone that kind of money. I’ve made some mistakes before, and I might have matched in the past, but Marshfield is building for the long haul. I plan on being in the Gold Division for a long time and I feel really good about this draft”.
When reminded that, historically, the Pirates draft terribly in the first round (Manziel, Treadwell, etc), Enright just got up and left, muttering something under his breath.

Haha, awesome Beauty and Beast reference.
“Under his breath” is the new “to my email face”
This move has ruffled some feathers. Sorry to put you in the middle of it. Apparently, I’ve learned nothing during my time in the league.
If the move results in a Battery championship then it’s worth every penny.
A division win would satisfy me.
Did you know the Pirates haven’t won the division since 2012? Sad …
Or did you literally mean winning a single division game?
Also it’s pretty impressive that you found a picture of Freeman and Gurley together.
The sad truth is I found and saved that picture last season, for this exact moment, only in the completely opposite circumstance …
$85 for one win is sound economics in Clevelandvilletown
