Last year the Colliders gambled and applied the franchise tag to running back Derrick Henry, in hopes he’d stay healthy. It paid off, as Henry finished as the fourth-best running back, only missing one game (the championship game, obviously.)
They also gambled and paid $65 on Christian McCaffrey. That paid off as well, as C-Mac not only stayed healthy all season long, but also got traded from the moribund Panthers to the thriving 49ers squad that got better each time a QB was hurt and replaced. McCaffrey finished second overall among running backs.
The Colliders signed him to a 1-year “prove it” deal and prove it he did. So now he gets the franchise tag ($65.05, a raise of one American nickel.) Health is still a major concern for him, but the other options at running back (AJ Dillon, Rachaad White) don’t inspire a ton of confidence. So the Colliders will gamble once more.
To make room for McCaffrey, and the reigning defensive MVP Maxx Crosby, who is holding out for $19, the Colliders cut ties with Sam Hubbard. Hubbard has been a solid, if not spectacular contributor, and his $27 price tag was just too high for what he does. The Colliders believe they can replace his production with the likes of Kwity Paye, Travon Walker, and George Karlaftis.
While Crosby stands to get paid, the other Collider holdout, Christian Kirk, is being shopped on the trade market.
“With Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb playing on team-friendly contracts, it would be a slap in the face to them to make Christian Kirk the team’s highest paid wide receiver,” said Colliders owner Josh Hammond, sagely.
While some teams will surely be disappointed to see McCaffrey removed from the list of available free agents in the auction (July 1st), there are still plenty of quality running backs to be had. In fact, quality players abound as new contract rules implemented a few years ago are now bearing fruit – that fruit being good players available for all!
Will the 49ers go to and win the Super Bowl on the legs of Christian McCaffrey, who will break his own single season Immersion scoring record?
Yes.
