Marshfield Offseason, Trades—Part 2

MARSHFIELD—He’s not even under contract yet.

Pirate owner Jason Enright woke up in a cold sweat from a bad dream, fearing he’d just traded the 1.12 pick for a player that won’t even play for his team.

He’s done that before you know. He drafted Johnny Manziel, Laquan Treadwell, saw Derrius Guice go down with an immediately season-ending injury, the list goes on … Enright has a knack for ruining people’s careers in the first round of the SCUFFLE Draft. This year was different he thought, this year he’d trade the pick for a proven player, like he used to back many years ago in what became known as the “Enright Draft”, ie, having no picks from top 3 to 5 rounds. I caught up with Enright to find out exactly what was going on in that mind of his.

Me: People are laughing and saying that you just traded the 1.12 pick for a player that isn’t even guaranteed to sign for your team. Extremists are saying that Josh Hammond might even have an outside chance of being Time’s Man of the Year for getting a Round 1 pick out of a player that he had no ability to resign, comparing this to the water to wine miracle. I tend to agree with them. What are you saying?

Jason: Does it change your opinion that I initiated the trade?

Me: That makes it worse, actually

Jason: There are no Barkley’s in this draft, no sure fire picks as far as I can tell. I look at it this way: if I could have any player in this draft at the slotted salary, or Julio Jones for 1-2 years, even at $50 a year, I’m taking Julio. This is how I used to roll and although the draft is quite a lot of fun, sometimes one just has to remember their strengths and weaknesses.

Me: Did anything good come from this trade?

Jason: I tend to think I know what I’m doing. I ended up with the 2.10 and the 3.08 picks in return, and I’m actually pretty good at drafting in the third round. I was able to acquire the 1.09 in another trade, so there’s still a chance I take another shot at this.

Me: Before you seriously considering drafting someone with that 1.09 pick, I should show you this: *Shows Jason a tweet.* What are your thoughts on this?

Jason: Well, he’s got a point …

Time will tell who’s career he ruins next …
