Immersion Draft Order

* THIS RULE HAS PASSED *

Greetings.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to determine the SCUFFLE Immersion draft order.  Picks 1-6 are very straightforward – they are the non-playoff teams.  They are ranked in the reverse order of their Futile Franchise seeds.  So here’s 1-6 (not accounting for trades yet.)

  1. Kensington Dragons
  2. Jonathan Marcot’s team (formerly Detroit Doctors)
  3. Kamino Bounty Hunters
  4. Biloxi Bulldozers
  5. Fransburg (r)EvoLUtion
  6. Sweet Home Gridiron Gang

Just an aside, I’m not considering those team’s performance in the Most Futile Franchise tournament, because we don’t want to reward “tanking it.” Also, this is how the NFL does it.

Now, where things get interesting is with ranking the playoff teams.  Last year, we ranked by regular season finish, but it kind of matched up with playoff performance anyway.  Personally, I think the best model is to just emulate the NFL model, where playoff performance determines your draft pick:

Teams that reached the playoffs the previous season are then slotted in the order in which they were eliminated as indicated in the table below. Within each tier, the slotting is determined as above (i.e. worst record picks first and the same tiebreakers apply).[57]

Status Draft picks
Non-playoff teams 1–20
Eliminated in Wild Card round 21–24
Eliminated in Divisional round 25–28
Eliminated in Conference Championships 29–30
Super Bowl losing team 31
Super Bowl champion 32

So, using that philosophy, the order of 7-12 would look like this:

7.  North Point Chitons (round 1 loser, #5 seed in playoffs)
8.  Bestine Banthas (round 1 loser, #3 seed in playoffs)
9.  Sullivan’s Island Silvertips (round 2 loser, #6 seed in playoffs)
10.  Marshfield Pirates (round 2 loser, #2 seed in playoffs)
11.  Madtown Marauders (Immersion Bowl II loser)
12.  Batavia Colliders (Immersion Bowl II winner)

I think this would be the best way, but it’s not the only way.  Another strategy would be to base the draft order solely on the regular season and not account for the playoffs at all.  With that strategy, the draft order would look like this:

  1. Kensington Dragons
  2. Marcot’s Team (formerly Doctors)
  3. Kamino Bounty Hunters
  4. Biloxi Bulldozers
  5. Fransburg (r)EvoLUtion
  6. Sweet Home Gridiron Gang
  7. Sullivan’s Island Silvertips
  8. North Point Chitons
  9. Batavia Colliders
  10. Bestine Banthas
  11. Marshfield Pirates
  12. Madtown Marauders

My two cents is this:  why should the champion get the 9th pick in the draft?  So, I still prefer the NFL model.  However, let’s throw out one more option.  I’ll call this the “Hybrid Model.”  In this example, the playoff teams get ranked according to regular season finish, with the exception of the Immersion Bowl contestants;  they get moved to the end of the line:

  1. Kensington Dragons
  2. Marcot’s Team
  3. Kamino Bounty Hunters
  4. Biloxi Bulldozers
  5. Fransburg (r)EvoLUtion
  6. Sweet Home Gridiron Gang
  7. Sullivan’s Island Silvertips
  8. North Point Chitons
  9. Bestine Banthas (would have been Colliders, but they move to the end)
  10. Marshfield Pirates
  11. Madtown Marauders
  12. Batavia Colliders

So, I would like to have a discussion here about which method we prefer.  Then we can vote on it and codify it as an official rule.  Despite our best efforts, it’s amazing how many things aren’t written clearly down in the rule book.  I think that this is a fairly important one, and I want to make sure everyone understands and is on board.

I have outlined three possible options, but if you have a fourth/better option, then we can discuss that here too.

Personally, I think the NFL model is the best one.  Thanks in advance for your input.

Should we get rid of kickers and punters?

  • No (71%, 5 Votes)
  • Yes (29%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 7

  1. Agreed. I understand the NFL style, am used to it, and therefore want to use it. It seems really odd for the Champion to potentially have the #7 pick in the draft, not to mention that new things frighten me.

    • No worries…looks like 5 votes for the NFL model so far. I thought that was the right way to go, but I wanted to make sure everyone was on board. Two more votes will give us a simple majority.
